Gugulethu police registered a case of murder following a shooting incident on the N2 highway on Tuesday, 25 August, at about 10:58.

Taxi driver killed in N2 attack

Provincial police spokesperson Const Ndakhe Gwala said, according to reports, the deceased, who was identified as a 27-year-old taxi driver, was chased by two unidentified suspects from Kanana Informal Settlement.

“He sustained gunshot wounds to the head and was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack is believed to be related to taxi violence,” said Gwala.

She said officers are following all available leads and no arrest has been effected at this stage.

Shooting leaves community shaken

A member of the Gugulethu Community Policing Forum (CPF) who asked not to be named for fear of harassment described the incident as shocking. He declined to comment further, stating that he did not have the full report.

“I don’t know what really happened. But I heard that there was a man who was chased all the way from Kanana and he was shot and killed near the N2. I don’t know what the motive behind that was,” he stated.

He stated that the perpetrators deserve to be arrested. He stressed that criminals have no mercy anymore. He urged anyone with relevant information to come forward or report it to their nearest police station.
