Gugulethu police have registered cases of murder and attempted murder following a shooting at the Europe informal settlement on Sunday, 23 August, at about 20:30.

Provincial police spokesperson Const. Ndakhe Gwala said officers responded to reports of a shooting and, on arrival, found the body of a 27-year-old man lying in front of a shack. The deceased had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body and was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel.

Police investigate fatal shooting

“The second victim, a 27-year-old man, sustained injuries and was transported to a medical facility for treatment. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation, and no arrests have been made at this stage,” said Gwala.

Community raises alarm over Gugulethu gun violence

A community leader from Europe, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said shootings are becoming the norm in Gugulethu. He urged the government to deploy more officers on the ground.

“We need to see more officers on the ground, especially at night and during weekends, because that is when most incidents occur. They must conduct stop-and-search operations. It seems young people are becoming the most dangerous in our communities,” he said. He urged residents to report any criminal activity to the nearest police station.
