Gugulethu police registered a culpable homicide case following an accident on Tuesday, 11 August, on the N2 highway opposite Gugulethu towards Cape Town. The incident occurred at 17:15.

Police investigation: culpable homicide and robbery

Provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk said that according to the report, officers attended to an accident at the location.

“Further investigation on the scene revealed that the 16-year-old deceased was allegedly involved in a smash-and-grab incident, where he fled the scene and ran in front of an oncoming Ford EcoSport vehicle. The vehicle hit him and he was declared deceased due to injuries sustained on the scene by medical personnel,” said Van Wyk.

He stated that Gugulethu officers also registered a common robbery case for further investigation.

Community calls for N2 wall amid rising smash-and-grab incidents

A community leader from Europe informal settlement in Gugulethu said it was high time for the City to start erecting a high wall along the N2. He said criminals are doing as they please.

“Crime is rife in our communities. The fact that criminals have the audacity to rob cars on the N2 tells us that there is no coming back. The City needs to build it now before it is too late,” he said, adding that motorists on the N2 are becoming targets for criminals.

The leader said he believes the deceased was from his area. He urged the government to impose stringent sentences on the perpetrators.
