This is what Noord Suid is all about. Neil de Kock scorched over in the dying seconds before Ruan Fluks held his nerve with the conversion that mattered most, handing Garsfontein an absolutely breathtaking 21-20 comeback victory over Stellenberg. The Pretoria side clawed back from 20-7 down at halftime to snatch one of the great Noord Suid victories from the jaws of defeat.
For 35 minutes, this looked like the Ethan van Biljon show. The Stellenberg flyhalf conducted a tactical kicking masterclass, dropping high bombs that tested Garsfontein’s aerial skills and territorial discipline from the opening whistle. His boot parked Stellenberg in the opposition 22 repeatedly, and the Cape side capitalised ruthlessly.
The relentless pressure eventually cracked Garsfontein’s defensive wall. When Stellenberg shifted the ball wide, space opened up and they made no mistake, crossing for a 7-0 lead. The game plan was simple but devastatingly effective, kick long, chase hard, apply pressure.
Van Biljon’s boot drove Garsfontein backwards again, pinning them deep before Stellenberg piled on the pressure in the 22. A second try followed to double the advantage to 14-0, and the Cape side were purring. This was the same tactical blueprint that had dismantled Paarl Gim, and it was working to perfection once more.
A penalty extended the lead to 17-0 through Van Biljon’s accurate boot. When Garsfontein conceded another breakdown penalty, the flyhalf pointed to the sticks with ominous confidence. He didn’t miss. At 20-0 with five minutes left in the half, Stellenberg were cruising towards what looked like a comfortable victory.
But Garsfontein refused to fold. In the dying moments of the half, they ramped up the physicality, taking the collision battle to Stellenberg and setting up multiple phases in the 22. Justin Blom crashed over from close range, and Ruan Fluks’s conversion made it 20-7 at halftime. It was a lifeline, nothing more.
The second half became an exercise in frustration for Garsfontein. Every time they found territory, Stellenberg won the turnover and Van Biljon’s boot pushed them back to square one. The tactical kicking game that had dominated the first half showed no signs of letting up.
But Garsfontein sensed an opportunity off the counter. Quick recycling, hard forward carries, and a shift to the wide channels created space. De Kock used his blistering pace to make metres, and the momentum built. Three phases later, Stefan van der Vyver powered over to make it 20-14. Game on.
The last quarter became a siege. Garsfontein pressed relentlessly, hunting the scores that would complete an improbable comeback. With five minutes remaining, they earned a penalty and backed their driving maul. The ball came out, but three phases later disaster struck, Stellenberg won the turnover and launched a counter-attack that ate up 50 metres.
Just when it looked like the Cape side would seal the win, as Garsfontein conceded a penalty. Van Biljon lined up the kick that would effectively end the contest. He missed. Garsfontein had one last chance.
The counter-attack was launched with desperation and belief in equal measure. Garsfontein worked the ball wide once, then wider still, stretching Stellenberg’s defensive line to breaking point. De Kock found himself in space with the tryline beckoning and two defenders to beat.
The speedster hit top gear, burning past one defender before stepping the second. He dived over in the corner, and the Garsfontein faithful erupted. But the job wasn’t done, they needed the conversion to win.
Twenty metres in from the touchline, Ruan Fluks stood over the ball with the weight of the world on his shoulders. Miss, and Garsfontein would suffer heartbreak. Nail it, and complete one of Noord Suid’s great comebacks.
Fluks went through his routine, blocked out the noise, and struck the ball sweetly. It sailed between the uprights. Garsfontein 21, Stellenberg 20. Scenes of absolute pandemonium.
