South Africans will see mixed news at the pumps from tonight, with some fuel prices going up while others come down.
Petrol:
- Petrol 93 will increase by just 1 cent per litre
- Petrol 95 will increase by 8 cents per litre
Diesel (Good News):
- Diesel 0.05% will decrease by 10 cents per litre
- Diesel 0.005% will decrease by 8 cents per litre
Other Fuels:
- Paraffin will decrease by 11-15 cents per litre
- LPGas will decrease by 17-19 cents per kilogram
The fuel price adjustments are driven by several factors:
International oil prices increased slightly during September, with Brent Crude oil rising from $67.01 to $67.16 per barrel. This was mainly due to ongoing conflicts in Russia-Ukraine and the Middle East.
The rand strengthened against the US dollar (from R17.73 to R17.49), which helped to soften the blow of higher international prices. Without this improvement in the exchange rate, the increases would have been larger.
Wage increases for petrol station staff have also been factored into the petrol price, adding 6.1 cents per litre to cover the new wage agreement.
Petrol users will feel a slight pinch, especially those using 95 octane fuel. However, diesel users and those who rely on paraffin will benefit from lower prices. The good news is that the petrol increase is relatively small, with 93 octane users barely affected.
