Free State crimes opposed with police intervention

Knives overtook firearms as the most commonly used murder weapon in the Free State during the first quarter of 2026, with 52 knife-related killings compared to 34 firearm murders, new police statistics reveal.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) crime data for January to March 2026 shows the province recorded zero gang-related murders, contrasting sharply with the Western Cape’s 225 cases during the same period.

Arguments and misunderstandings remained the primary driver of violence, accounting for 59 murders in the province. The statistics show that 97 murders occurred in public places, whilst 54 took place in residences.

Agricultural communities faced continued threats, with one farmer killed and 12 murders recorded on farms, plots and small holdings across the province. Four multiple-murder incidents claimed nine victims.

Domestic violence figures present a deeply concerning picture, with the Free State recording 72 attempted murders in domestic settings – the second-highest figure after the Northern Cape. Domestic violence cases also included 25 murders, 99 rapes, 711 assaults with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and 1 498 common assault cases.

Rape statistics revealed 289 incidents occurred in residences, with 88 in public spaces and six on agricultural land. Five rape cases were reported at educational institutions, including day care centres, schools, and special needs facilities.

Extortion cases totalled 20, comprising 11 financial extortion incidents, five blackmail cases, and three protection rackets. The protection rackets included two taxi-related cases and one targeting a liquor outlet.

The statistics form part of Firoz Cachalia’s, acting police minister, “Reset Agenda,” which aims to rebuild public trust through operational excellence, ethical leadership and strengthened community partnerships.

National police have arrested more than 218 000 suspects since January through Operation Shanela, including 31 106 wanted criminals linked to serious violent crimes.
