OLIFANTSHOEK – Two cases of murder and one case of attempted murder are being investigated by the police in Olifantshoek after a shooting incident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday 3 May.
It is alleged that a 54-year-old male and his 51-year-old wife were at a friend’s house when an argument ensued between them. Their 26-year-old son reportedly arrived and intervened.
It is believed that the 54-year-old male fired several shots, fatally wounding his wife and son. A 36-year-old female was injured and transported to hospital for treatment.
The suspect then reportedly fled to the home of a friend, where he allegedly sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
He was transported to hospital for treatment, where he was placed under arrest and is currently under police guard, said Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, who added that investigations continue.
Jail time for killing partner
In another unrelated and completed case in the Northern Cape, a Rosedale resident, Marisha Olyn (30), has been convicted and sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment in the Upington Regional Court for the murder of her life partner, Nicozane Swartz.
On 18 January 2025, the couple were involved in an argument, which led to the accused stabbing her life partner in the chest. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries on the same day.
The ZF Mgcawu District Commissioner, Major General Monica Sebili, commended the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant JA Visagie, for his meticulous investigation that resulted in the successful conviction.
She reiterated that domestic violence remains a priority and that the South African Police Service will work vigorously to ensure that cases are thoroughly investigated and perpetrators are brought to justice.
