South Africa’s largest coalition of faith-based organisations is urging Christians across the country to unite in prayer this Easter weekend, as the nation grapples with crime, corruption and economic hardship.
The South African Community of Faith-Based Fraternals and Federations (SACOFF), which represents more than 24 000 churches nationwide, has outlined a series of national prayer priorities aimed at what it calls the restoration of the country.
“This Easter, we are not only reflecting on the resurrection of Christ,” says Pastor Bert Pretorius, president of SACOFF. “We are envisioning the restoration of a nation. We are calling on believers across South Africa to pray for the country we believe God is raising up.”
The initiative comes at a time when South Africa faces multiple challenges, including rising crime rates, gender-based violence, corruption and widespread unemployment.
SACOFF’s prayer vision covers nine key areas: establishing faith as central to families and communities, national renewal, righteous leadership free from corruption, economic recovery through job creation and business growth, improved safety and security, strengthened families, youth empowerment, national unity and reconciliation, and an active church presence in communities.
The organisation says prayers for leadership focus on integrity, humility and accountability in both public and private sectors, whilst economic concerns centre on sustainable provision for households across the country.
Safety remains a primary concern, with faith communities calling for a decrease in crime and violence. SACOFF also places particular emphasis on youth, praying for young South Africans to become leaders and positive change-makers.
“This is not just a moment of reflection – it is a moment of responsibility,” Pretorius adds. “We believe that as the Church rises in prayer and action, we will see transformation in our nation.”
The organisation is encouraging churches, faith leaders and citizens to participate in the prayer movement throughout the Easter weekend and beyond.
SACOFF has issued a declaration affirming its vision: “South Africa shall be saved. South Africa shall be restored. South Africa shall fulfil its God-given purpose.”
