FREE STATE – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has officially bid farewell to one of its most distinguished senior leaders, Free State provincial commissioner Lt Gen. Baile Brenda Motswenyane, as she marked her final day in office.
In a moving display of respect and camaraderie, members and staff based at the Provincial Office in the Metpol Building and other provincial components situated in buildings throughout Bloemfontein lined up to form a massive guard of honour. This ceremony followed prayers conducted by the SAPS Spiritual Services unit.
The formation stretched from the heart of the building to the exit, creating a symbolic path for Motswenyane as she walked out of the headquarters for the final time in her official capacity.
The atmosphere at the Metpol Building was deeply emotional, as colleagues, subordinates, and senior management gathered to witness the departure of a leader known for her motherly yet firm approach to policing. Having served the SAPS for 37 years, Motswenyane’s journey from junior constable to provincial commissioner demonstrates her resilience and dedication to the people of South Africa.
Distinguished service record
Since her appointment as Free State Provincial Commissioner in 2019, she has been instrumental in prioritising the revitalisation of Community Policing Forums (CPFs) and leading high-impact operations that targeted illicit mining and cross-border crimes.
As Motswenyane moved through the guard of honour, many members could not conceal their emotions. The Metpol farewell was characterised by traditional songs, salutes, and tears, reflecting the deep bond she shared with those who worked closely with her.
Whilst the departure of Motswenyane leaves a significant void, SAPS management assures the public that stable leadership remains a priority. An announcement regarding the acting provincial commissioner will be made in due course to ensure that the province’s safety operations continue without interruption.
The farewell ceremony stands as testimony to the respect and affection earned by a leader who dedicated nearly four decades of her life to serving and protecting the communities of South Africa.
