The City of Ekurhuleni in Johannesburg has confirmed that the member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for roads and transport management, Councilor Andile Mngwevu, is currently missing following a flooding incident in Mozambique.
According to the City, Mngwevu was travelling in a vehicle in the Chokwé area when it was swept away by floodwaters. His whereabouts, along with those of other occupants in the vehicle, remain unconfirmed.
In a statement issued today (18 January), the City said information received through official diplomatic and security channels confirmed that Mngwevu had travelled to the Chokwé area in Mozambique.
It added that a South African rescue mission deployed to the country has managed to establish contact with one of the five individuals who were travelling in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
However, the status and whereabouts of Mngwevu and the remaining occupants have not yet been confirmed.
The City said the South African mission is actively engaging with local Mozambican authorities and emergency services in the affected area as search and rescue efforts continue.
Meanwhile, the office of the executive mayor, in cooperation with national government, is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating efforts through the appropriate diplomatic and emergency channels.
The City said it will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
