Stellenbosch police are warning residents to not slack when it comes to safety measures in terms of vehicle theft.

According to local police motor vehicle theft remains a serious concern. “Criminals often target vehicles that are left unlocked, parked in isolated areas or without adequate security measures. Every vehicle owner has a role to play in preventing this crime,” said Captain Nathalie Martin, spokesperson for Stellenbosch police.

She adds theft of motor vehicles has increased in Stellenbosch and staying vigilant and taking necessary precautions can significantly reduce the risk.

Hotspot areas include Plein, Hofmeyer, De Waal, Banghoek, Doornbosch, Elektron, Suidwal and Rhodes streets. Thieves are especially busy on Thursdays and Saturdays between 09:00 and 12:00 and 18:00 and 21:00.

Toyota Fortuner and Volkswagen Golf vehicles are often targeted.

“Stay alert, protect your vehicle, and report suspicious activity. Crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility,” Martin implores.

Safety tips:

• Always lock your vehicle, close all windows and remove the keys.
• Park in a well-lit area whenever possible and remove valuables from sight.
• Install a tracking device, alarm system or steering wheel lock for added security.
• Be alert when approaching or leaving your vehicle, especially at night or in isolated areas.
• Ensure your vehicle’s VIN and registration details are recorded and stored safely.
• Avoid leaving your vehicle unattended while it is idling.
• Do not share your vehicle’s location or travel plans publicly on social media.
• If you suspect someone is following you, drive to the nearest police station or a busy public place instead of going home.
• If your vehicle is stolen, report it to the nearest police station as soon as possible and provide all relevant information, including the registration number, make, model, colour and any tracking details.
