Horizon House, a non-profit care centre for adults with intellectual disabilities in Onder-Papegaaiberg, will host its annual Kermis on Saturday 7 November – its biggest fundraising event of the year.
Since 1974, the centre has provided a home and protected work environment for 136 residents, including 16 who require full-time care, as well as 24 day-programme participants.
As an NPO, it generates much of its own funding, making the Kermis critical to its financial sustainability.
The weekend starts on Friday 6 November, with Sundowners from 17:00 to 19:00, featuring live music, beer and wine, boerewors rolls and rotis. Trail run registration and late entries will also be open.

Plethora of activities
Saturday begins with the Horison Challenge Trail Run at 07:00, offering 3 km, 5 km and 10 km routes. The traditional Kermis runs from 09:00 to 13:00 with a wide food offering: pancakes, roosterkoek, rib burgers, Greek pitas, butter chicken, potjiekos, lamb on the spit, pies, cakes and more.
Shoppers can browse handmade woodwork, needlework, Christmas decorations, plants and baked goods from Horizon House’s workrooms, along with bric-a-brac, thrift clothing, pottery and a second-hand bookstore.
Children can enjoy games, Tombola and a jumping castle, while car enthusiasts can view the antique car exhibition.
A potjiekos competition invites teams of two to four to showcase their culinary skills at R400 per team entry.
Live entertainment includes the Weskaap Boereorkes, with beer, wine and König Coffee on offer. Village Thyme will serve home-cooked fare, and after the Kermis the Springboks take on Italy on the big screen at 13:40.
All proceeds of the event go directly towards the care and support of adults with intellectual disabilities. The Kermis takes place at Huis Horison in Patrys Street. Entry is free.
