The provincial Department of Health and Wellness has confirmed an increased number of measles cases in the Stellenbosch area, along with the Breede Valley, Drakenstein and Langeberg.

Measles is a serious illness that can lead to severe health complications if your child is not immunised against this disease.

Sister Roenell Balie, assistant manager for Facility Based Services in the Cape Winelands District, encouraged parents and caregivers to check that their young children have been vaccinated. “We are ready to help you at your nearest clinic and the outreaches of our mobile clinics.”

Know the signs

Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose and conjunctivitis (red eyes). These are followed by a characteristic red blotchy rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.

The virus spreads through tiny droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Measles can be especially dangerous for young children and individuals with weakened immune systems.

The most effective way to prevent measles is through the measles vaccine, which not only protects individuals, but also helps prevent the spread of the disease in the community.

“We encourage parents to ensure that your child’s immunisation schedule is up to date and to visit your nearest healthcare facility for your child’s catchup immmunisation,” Balie implored.

The department urged parents to look out for measles symptoms and keep their children at home when they have one or more of these symptoms, so as to curb the spread of this highly contagious disease.

Should your child run a fever, feel sleepy or struggle to eat, take them to the nearest clinic immediately.
