Spier Light Art has issued a call for artists ahead of the 2027 edition of the interactive art exhibition, which will be on display at the historic Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch from Friday 26 February to Sunday 21 March 2027.
The ninth edition of Spier Light Art is South Africa’s leading platform for light-based contemporary art and Africa’s longest-running exhibition of its kind.
Curated by Vaughn Sadie, the exhibition commissions new works in which light functions as concept, medium and subject matter.

All disciplines welcome
There is no fixed theme for 2027. Artists are free to explore ideas relevant to their practice, including technology, resilience, enchantment and the context of a working wine farm and its landscape.
Proposals are welcomed from artists and makers across all disciplines and career stages.
Eligible work includes site-specific installations, sculpture, interactive art, digital works, video art, and sound and light integration.
Expressions of interest are due by Tuesday 21 July and must be submitted via email on spierlightart@lightplace.org.
Shortlisted artists will be invited to develop a more detailed proposal, with final selections confirmed early October.
For full submission requirements and to RSVP for a briefing on Saturday 4 July, send an email to spierlightart@lightplace.org or visit www.spierlightart.co.za.
