Women’s Month is well on its way, and the Stellenbosch Art Association is hosting a women’s showcase, which opens at the PJ Olivier Art Centre on Thursday 6 August.

The exhibit also forms part of First Thursdays, which has become an established item on the Stellenbosch calendar.

Here visitors can view art by female artists such as sculptress Jean Theron Louw, multimedia artist Varenka Paschke and painter and digital artist Mpho Jacobs.

Art activist Nell Louise Pollock will join the exhibition from Tuesday 11 August. Her art includes embroidery of social commentary on feminism, womanhood and the ongoing scourge of gender-based violence.

Diverse voices

The exhibition also celebrates the creativity, talent and diverse artistic voices of women artists and offers the community an opportunity to experience an inspiring collection of contemporary artworks.

Along with the established artists local artist and current waiter Jade Lubbe’s work will also be on display. She recently participated in the inaugural Art of Origin Stellenbosch contest.

The judges for the competition, which was presented by Visit Stellenbosch in partnership with Art Association Stellenbosch, were so impressed with Lubbe’s work they invited her to showcase her work at the Women’s Day exhibition.

Her acrylic piece, Kuluntu, sought to capture what Stellenbosch means to her. “That is what I know Stellenbosch as being now; this amalgamation of different cultures – from Afrikaans to Xhosa and Shona. To me this is what makes Stellenbosch feel like home; the fact that everyone belongs,” Lubbe said.

The exhibition runs until Friday 28 August and is open to the public on weekdays from 09:00 to 16:00.
