Saturday 16 May saw some dramatic and surprise outcomes on the rugby field, with especially the local derbies delivering exhilarating play.

In Super League A, Franschhoek stood firm and pulled a rabbit out of the hat to record a historic 23-22 victory over Maties at Groendal Sports Ground, while the poor form of Van der Stel-Evergreens (VDE) continued as they were annihilated 3-99 by Brackenfell at Van der Stel.

Super League C hopeful Kylemore suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 22-15 to hosts Eerste River, while Raithby Universals notched up their second win of the season, beating Atlantis 26-17.

The Northern League again delivered a humdinger of a derby, with Blakes narrowly edging out Excelsior 26-27 at Cloetesville Sports Ground.

In the other derby in the league the unbeaten streak of table-topping Blue Stars United continued, as they thumped Cloetesville 78-8 in Klapmuts.

Faure was also on the winning side, crushing Gordon’s Bay Pioneers 15-43 at the Naval Sports Ground.

This coming weekend (Saturday 23 May) yet another mouth-watering derby awaits the fans of Blakes and Blue Stars as the Northern League’s top two teams will battle it out for honours and bragging rights at Cloetesville Sports Ground.

Both teams boast unbeaten records to date, so the match is sure to be one for the books.

The other Northern League derby will see Excelsior host Stellenbosch Coronations, while Cloetesville will hope to finally get a win when they welcome Morning Star.

Faure will look to carry on their winning momentum when they take on Whistling Wheels.

In SLC Kylemore will hope to put their first defeat behind them and return to winning ways when they travel to take on Gardens in Oranjezicht, while Pniël Villagers will give it their all when they take on log leaders Rangers in Surrey Estate.

The SLA clashes will see Franschhoek hosting SK Walmers at Groendal, while hosts VDE takes on UCT Ikeys.

Both RU and Maties will enjoy a bye weekend.
