Durban Super Giants secured a 15-run victory over MI Cape Town in the SA20 season opener, posting their franchise’s second-highest total before successfully defending it in a nail-biting finish.
After winning the toss, Super Giants captain Aiden Markram elected to bat first, a decision that proved astute as his openers laid a formidable foundation. Devon Conway and Kane Williamson dismantled the Cape Town bowling attack, racing to 66 without loss at 12 runs per over through the powerplay.
The partnership flourished until the ninth over when Williamson 40(25) fell to Tristan Luus, caught by Rashid Khan. Jos Buttler briefly threatened with a six before departing for 20(12) balls, leaving DSG at 128/2.
Conway continued his assault, reaching 64(33) before Jason Smith poached a catch to dismiss him with the Super Giants at 144/3. Heinrich Klaasen 22(14) and captain Markram 35(17) maintained the momentum before both fell in quick succession. DSG posted 232/5 at the end of their 20 overs.
MI Cape Town’s chase began promisingly through Ryan Rickleton’s explosive batting. Despite losing Rassie van der Dussen early for 2, Rickleton found regular boundaries, keeping pace with the required rate through a flurry of sixes.
The innings pivoted on Rickleton’s 76-run partnership with Jason Smith, which ended when Smith 41 (14) was caught by Markram. However, Rickleton continued his remarkable knock, surviving a no-ball dismissal in the 16th over before reaching his century with a towering six.
Drama intensified as Rickleton brought the equation down to 22 required from six balls. However, his dismissal on the first delivery of the final over for 113(63) effectively sealed Cape Town’s fate. Despite George Linde’s desperate attempts, DSG held their nerve to claim a memorable victory.
The match showcased the explosive nature of SA20 cricket, with both sides demonstrating the tournament’s entertainment value. Rickleton’s century stood as the innings highlight, though it ultimately proved insufficient against a well-rounded Super Giants performance.
