South Africa is facing growing concerns over the frequency of multi-million rand drug busts, as police continue to uncover large-scale drug operations and manufacturing facilities across the country.
In the latest major seizure, police have arrested a 38-year-old man and seized drugs with an estimated street value of over R9.7 million during an intelligence-driven operation in Gqeberha.
Police executed a search warrant at a house in Rowallan Park on Saturday, 24 October, as part of Operation Ukubuza under the National Organised Crime Intervention targeting violent organised crime.
Officers found the suspect inside a vehicle parked in the garage at the premises. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of various drugs suspected to be mandrax, cocaine and tik.
Police also seized drug-packaging materials and cash believed to be the proceeds of crime during the operation.
Warrant Officer Mapula Rikhotso said the suspected drug substances will be subjected to a forensic analysis to confirm its exact composition.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Gqeberha Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 26 October 2026, to face drug-related charges. Investigations remain ongoing.
Rikhotso said the SAPS remains committed to intensifying operations aimed at dismantling organised criminal networks and disrupting the illicit drug trade, which threatens the safety and well-being of communities.
