Two exciting days of school pride, athletic talent and camaraderie culminated on Saturday 1 August as Zandvliet High School (ZHS) claimed overall victory in the annual Derby Day against rivals Macassar High School (MHS).

Held on Friday 31 July and Saturday 1 August, the multi-sport event brought together learners, staff, parents, and enthusiastic local supporters to witness high-stakes clashes across rugby, netball, soccer, and chess.

The rugby field proved to be a fortress for Zandvliet High School, with all four ZHS teams recording convincing victories over their Macassar counterparts:

• – Under-14: ZHS 15-0 MHS
• – Under-15: ZHS 28-0 MHS
• – Under-16: ZHS 20-5 MHS
• – Under-19: ZHS 20-3 MHS

The under-19 victory was particularly significant, marking the third consecutive year Zandvliet’s flagship rugby team has defeated Macassar in the annual derby.

Macassar High School delivered a powerful answer on the netball courts, staging a clean sweep of their own across all three age divisions:

• – Under-14: MHS 14-4 ZHS
• – Under-16: MHS 19-4 ZHS
• – Under-19: MHS 47-13 ZHS

The soccer fixtures produced a balanced contest: Under-15: Played to a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

• – Under-17: Zandvliet secured an impressive 2-0 victory.
• – Under-19: Macassar responded with a solid 2-0 win of their own.

At the chess boards, Zandvliet High School showcased strategic excellence, securing victories in both categories:

• – Boys’ chess: ZHS won 6-1.
• – Girls’ chess: ZHS recorded a 3-0 win.

While Zandvliet High School officially walked away as the 2026 Derby Day champions, the overarching highlight of the event was the spirit of healthy rivalry, mutual respect, and friendship shared between the two schools.
