Two vehicle fires within hours of each other disrupted traffic for Helderberg motorists last Tuesday (3 February).
Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service, said crews received an urgent call at 07:30 regarding a vehicle fire near Somerset West Police Station, on the corner of Pastorie and Main roads.
Somerset West Fire Station crews responded immediately and extinguished the blaze by 08:00.
At 13:00, a second vehicle caught fire on the N2 near the R44 bridge.
The blaze spread to vegetation between lanes heading towards Somerset West and Cape Town, requiring additional resources, Carelse said.
Crews from Macassar Fire Station and a strike team from Sir Lowry’s Pass Fire Station responded and contained the fire by 15:30.
No injuries were reported in either incident. The causes of both fires remain unknown.
