A bowl of food can mean far more than a meal. It can be the start of trust, the relief of knowing a beloved dog will not go hungry and a quiet reminder that someone cares.

That spirit came to life when Montego Pet Nutrition shared nearly 300 kg of pet food and treats with Sweet Paws Rescue and Care and three deserving Helderberg community members as part of its Bursting with Character campaign. The handover also included Bags o’Wags, Montego’s range of dog treats, adding an extra moment of joy for dogs and the people who care for them.

For 26 years Montego has been guided by the belief that animal welfare and community welfare go hand in hand. Sweet Paws ensures that support reaches the animals and families who need it most, working closely with township communities where dogs are often found on chains, sleeping on bare ground or suffering from untreated wounds and preventable disease, alongside families who love their animals but need guidance and practical help.

“We don’t drive in, hand out food and leave,” said Anita Labuschagne, founder of Sweet Paws. “We build relationships, earn trust and keep going back.”

For Sweet Paws food is more than a donation. It opens conversations about sterilisation, vaccinations, shelter and lifelong care. A bag of food becomes a bridge to trust, and trust becomes the beginning of change.

That spirit comes through in three community members the partnership supports.

Young boy, big heart

At 13 Colby Yenoumba has become a caretaker to dogs he rescued from the street or removed from neglectful situations. “My dogs are everything to me. They protect me, rely on me to look after them and are my best friends, no matter how bad our situation may be.”

For Colby, Montego’s support means reassurance: his dogs can eat, stay healthy and keep being the companions that make him smile each morning. “This delivery is very special,” he said. “Thank you for this, Montego.”

Love that keeps a street together

In Broadlands recently widowed Muriel November has become a quiet source of care, looking after seven dogs who come to her home for food, treats and affection. To her they are company, comfort and protection. “The dogs give me a reason to want to live longer,” she said. “They like me and appreciate me.”

She feeds them morning and evening, speaks up for them when others complain and teaches children how to care for animals.

Caliban Botha is known as a respected man and devoted dog lover. With 12 sterilised dogs of his own, he feeds between 21 and 25 dogs each week, stepping in for neighbours who cannot care for their animals properly. He describes the joy of walking out with food and hearing the dogs greet him. His own dogs sleep inside, live as part of the family and have carried him through difficult moments.

“If my dogs could remember me for one thing it would be that I am their friend,” he said.

His biggest ongoing challenge is food and shelter, and Montego’s support has helped him feed his own animals and also the neighbourhood dogs who know his home as a place of safety.

Giving back, one bowl at a time

Every dog has a story, every community has people who care and every act of kindness can help create lasting change.

Some days bring heartbreak, but others bring hope: a child proudly caring for his pets, a widow finding comfort in the animals around her, a community member becoming a trusted voice for better pet care.

Members of the public who would like to help can purchase food for Sweet Paws at a discounted rate through the Montego website. Each contribution helps ensure more animals receive the nourishment they need, while supporting the dedicated community members who show up for them every day.

Golfers are also invited to tee-off for a furry cause at Strand Golf Club next month (October), with every swing helping to give animals a healthier, litter-free life.

Sweet Paws will hold its second annual fundraising golf day at Strand Golf Club on Friday 2 October. The organisation is calling on keen golfers to participate and help raise funds to sterilise more than 250 animals, preventing unwanted litters and giving pets the chance at a healthier life. Interested individuals can book a four-ball, sponsor a hole or simply show their support on the day.
