A talented teenager from the Helderberg is set to fly the flag for dance excellence after being chosen as an ambassador for the Theatre Dance Association (TDA), a global South African-based dance teachers’ association and syllabus organisation.
Heike Africa-Sylvester, a 14-year-old student of the Outline Dance Centre in Somerset West, has earned this prestigious recognition through her exceptional dedication, leadership, and passion for dance.
“I’m really excited and grateful to have been chosen as a TDA Ambassador,” Heike says. “It means a lot to have my dedication to dance recognised, and I’m looking forward to what lies ahead!”
Heike’s dance journey began early, starting lessons at Outline Dance Centre when she was just five years old. Her competitive spirit emerged quickly, placing second in her debut competition at age six. Since then, she has expanded her expertise across multiple disciplines including modern, acro, contemporary, jazz, and lyrical dance, while recently returning to ballet training.

Her dedication has yielded impressive results on the competitive circuit. Notable achievements include winning Most Outstanding Acro Solo at the TIME Dance Competition, claiming the MOVE National Champion title, securing second place with her duet partner at World Dance Movement, and earning the Ultimate Talent Junior Champion crown.

“Dancing has taught me so much about hard work and following my passion, and I can’t wait to keep learning and performing!” Heike reflects on her journey.
Heike trains under the guidance of Verne Krige, principal of Outline Dance Centre, who has witnessed her remarkable transformation firsthand.
“At just 14 years old, Heike has already achieved what many dancers can only dream of,” says Krige. “Her recent selection as TDA Ambassador for 2026 is a testament not only to her remarkable talent but also to her dedication, character, and work ethic.”

Krige notes Heike’s exceptional consistency throughout 2025, placing in the top three at every TDA competition she entered. “Such consistent excellence reflects the countless hours of training, discipline, and passion she pours into her craft,” he explains. “Yet what truly sets Heike apart is that her success extends far beyond trophies and placements. Even at such a young age, she has earned the admiration of peers for being kind, humble, and supportive of her fellow Outline dancers. These qualities make her not only a standout performer but also a wonderful role model.”
Krige is particularly impressed by her unwavering work ethic, noting: “Those who work with Heike know that her achievements are no accident. She approaches every class, rehearsal, and performance with determination and focus that’s remarkable for someone her age. Her commitment to constant improvement tells me she has a truly bright future ahead. I am genuinely proud to be Heike’s teacher.”
Looking ahead, Heike balances her artistic aspirations with academic goals. “I hope to keep dancing for as long as I can because it’s my biggest passion, while also chasing my dream of studying at Stellenbosch University.”
