Big guns out as Sharks name powerhouse pack for Stormers

The perfect start meets the ultimate test. After dispatching two heavyweight opponents at Kings Park, the Sharks pack their bags for Cape Town Stadium this Saturday, where the Stormers lie in wait, wounded, dangerous, and desperate to derail the Durban juggernaut.

Aslo read:

Two wins from two. Clean sheets at the set-piece. Momentum building. But head coach JP Pietersen knows the coastal derby represents a seismic step up in intensity, and he’s responded by unleashing the heavy artillery.

Ox Nché, Eben Etzebeth, and Ethan Hooker, all devastating impact players off the bench in last week’s statement victory over Leinster, have been elevated into the starting XV.

Brothers in arms, enemies on the day

If you want to understand what makes South African derby matches so brutally compelling, listen to Sharks scrum coach Philip Lemmer dissect this weekend’s set-piece battle.

“It’s definitely going to be a massive battle this week, it’s like two big brothers taking each other on at scrum time because they all know one another really well, having scrummed together at the Boks and against each other as well,” Lemmer explained.

“It’s a big contest and a big point of focus to see who can dominate at scrum time.”

The scrummaging duel alone could decide this match.

Standards, not statistics

The numbers paint a glowing picture of the Sharks’ set-piece dominance through the opening fortnight. But Lemmer refuses to measure his pack’s work in percentages.

“Pre-season helps a lot, but the standards the guys set for themselves is gold for us,” the scrum coach said. “Each guy keeps the guy next to him accountable and that’s the only way to drive standards.

“So, it’s our standards that are our fire, we’re not marking 90% or 100%, we’re marking standards on whether we nail the job or not and that’s keeping us accountable. If we maintain that, the results and good stats will come by themselves.”

That mentality has produced an enviable record at the set-piece, with “barely a blip” according to Lemmer. Maintaining those sky-high standards away from home, against a quality opponent, represents the next frontier.

Derby day dynamics

The context adds spice to an already combustible fixture. The Sharks sit pretty atop the South African conference with maximum points. The Stormers? They’ve suffered defeats and are staring down the barrel of falling further behind their coastal rivals.

Lemmer acknowledges the stakes extend beyond mere log points. “The local derbies are important for log points as well as the team’s morale and regardless of who the Stormers select, Boks or not, they’re a great team,” he said.

“We know it’s not going to be easy on Saturday, we’re in for a huge battle and that’s just as it should be. It’s set to be a tight contest, but hopefully a great game that showcases the best of this coastal rivalry.”

There’s the rub. An injured animal is dangerous, and the Stormers, will view this fixture as the perfect stage for redemption. Cape Town Stadium. Parochial home support. Local bragging rights on the line. Everything a proud franchise needs to ignite a desperate performance.

The Sharks’ challenge isn’t just beating the Stormers, it’s withstanding the inevitable onslaught when the home side throws everything at them in the opening exchanges.

Pietersen’s selections signal intent

The head coach has made several positional and rotational changes, reflecting what the Sharks describe as “grounded respect for the challenge ahead whilst remaining firmly focused on the team’s ambition.”

Translation: we respect the opposition, but we’re here to win.

Promoting Nché, Etzebeth, and Hooker from the bench represents the headline moves, but there’s depth throughout the selection. Phepsi Buthelezi returns to the number eight jersey. Jaden Hendrikse gets the nod at scrumhalf. André Esterhuizen captains the side from inside centre.

The bench? Absolutely loaded. Vincent Koch provides world-class front-row reinforcement. Jason Jenkins and Stephan Lewies offer pedigree in the second row. Ivan van Zyl and Gianni Lombard bring experience and game-management quality in the backs.

It’s a 23-man squad built to go the full distance in a brutal, attritional derby match.
