MKP campaign continues amid uncertainty over Zuma’s health

Conflicting reports about former president Jacob Zuma’s health have raised questions about his ability to fully lead the uMkhonto weSizwe party (MKP) election campaign, with less than a month before local elections on 4 November.

According to reports, Zuma was taken to hospital earlier this week after falling ill during a campaign visit to Msinga in KwaZulu-Natal. The Witness reported that an eyewitness saw him arrive at a hospital by ambulance. The newspaper later reported that several reliable sources confirmed he remains in hospital. However, the reason for his alleged admission and the nature of his condition have not been officially announced.

The MKP initially dismissed the reports, saying Zuma underwent a routine medical check-up, which he reportedly undergoes twice a year. Sifiso Mahlangu, the party’s spokesperson, said Zuma is “healthy and in good spirits” and that his campaign programme will continue. The party did not release further details about the check-up or fully address the reports about his arrival by ambulance.

The uncertainty comes at a sensitive time for the MKP. Zuma is the party’s most important public figure and his personal participation at rallies could play a role in mobilising supporters, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal.

His absence at a rally in uMhlathuze on 3 October already sparked dissatisfaction among some supporters. According to the SABC, people at the event asked where Zuma was, while some speakers were interrupted. Willie Mchunu, the MKP’s KwaZulu-Natal leader, apologised on behalf of Zuma and said the party president cannot personally attend every event.

The party’s challenge now is to provide clarity about Zuma’s campaign programme while reports about his health continue. It has not yet been confirmed which future rallies he will personally attend.

The MK party continues its election campaign despite uncertainty about former president Jacob Zuma’s health. The party shared photos and a report on X about two hours ago from an election event in the iLembe district, where leadership reaffirmed support for Khayelihle Madlala as the district’s incoming mayor. However, the post contains no update about Zuma’s health or his current campaign programme.
