Denver “Seun” Pietersen sentenced to 20 years for attempted murder, assault and firearm charges.

After nearly two years involving violent crimes, a brazen escape and a dramatic recapture, Denver “Seun” Pietersen has been sentenced to 20 years behind bars.

The 34-year-old appeared in Strand Regional Court on Thursday 26 February and was sentenced after pleading guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Pietersen was also sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for escaping from lawful custody. The sentences will run concurrently.

Pietersen became widely known after escaping from custody at Strand Magistrates’ Court along with co-accused Glenville Jantjies (22) and Rastum Alfestus (25) last October.

Court orderlies discovered the trio had escaped when they arrived to transport them back to Pollsmoor Correctional Centre. All three were recaptured within a month.

Alfestus was arrested at a Strand residence the day after the escape (28 October) following a tip-off from the community, while Jantjies handed himself over to police on 31 October (“Strand jailbreak: Second escaped prisoner surrenders, 1 still at large“, DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 3 November 2025).

Police searched for Pietersen for four weeks before finally apprehending him in dramatic circumstances on 25 November.

Strand police officers spotted Pietersen in Morkel’s Cottage informal settlement. When he tried to escape through the back of a dwelling, officers discharged their firearms, striking him in the chest (“Strand jailbreak: Last escapee netted, wounded in shootout with police,” 25 November 2025).

His arrest allegedly sparked community protests. Pietersen’s conviction relates to violent incidents in Morkel’s Cottage throughout 2024. He was arrested on 19 September 2024 and appeared in Strand Magistrates’ Court on 12 February 2025 for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, assault and two attempted murder charges.

The first offence occurred on 12 March 2024, when he was found in possession of an illegal firearm, despite him being declared unfit to possess a firearm due to a prior conviction.

The assault charge was brought against him following an incident on 28 July 2024, when he assaulted a man by hitting him in the face, beating him with a stick and stabbing him in the arm after the victim complained about noise Pietersen and his friends were causing.

The attempted murder charges relate to two separate incidents. On 23 August 2024, Pietersen stabbed a woman after confronting her about an incident involving his girlfriend and on 14 September, he shot at a police officer while trying to evade arrest.

Pietersen’s conviction resulted from dedicated investigative work by Strand police detectives Warrant Officer John Muller and Warrant Officer Graham van Rooyen.
