In an inspiring demonstration of community spirit and compassion, a massive joint winter outreach in Grabouw touched the lives of hundreds of local residents on Saturday 18 July, as part of the nationwide Madiba Day celebrations.

Organized by Radio Disa 95.9 FM in partnership with the NG Church Grabouw and several local congregations, the initiative distributed over 1 000 food parcels and hundreds of warm winter items to families in need.

The outreach was the culmination of a months-long campaign during which Radio Disa 95.9 FM rallied listeners to donate warm clothing, non-perishable food items, and financial contributions.

Monetary donations were used to purchase high-nutrition Maxi Blend food parcels – specially formulated one-pot meals designed to feed a family of three to four people. By the time distribution day arrived, crates were overflowing with clothing and stacks of food packages filled the facility.

“What we witnessed throughout the day was deeply moving,” said Monica Coetsee, Station Manager of Radio Disa 95.9 FM.

It was a day that reflected the true spirit of Madiba Day, ordinary people making an extraordinary difference through simple acts of kindness.

From young children to elderly residents in wheelchairs, hundreds waited side by side with dignity and hope. Volunteers moved through the lines, offering warm hugs, words of encouragement, and prayers for those requesting spiritual support.

Nearly 400 children attended the event. Each child was invited to choose their own winter accessory – ranging from scarves and gloves to cozy bed socks – and received a treat package containing a bag of chips and a fresh apple.

Not only was everyone accommodated, but significant leftover supplies enabled immediate additional distributions to key support organisations across Grabouw, including Huis Silverjare elderly care facility, St Michaels & All Angels Church, and ACVV Grabouw.
