The library’s R14,9 million expansion is on track for November, set to double the facility’s size and give the community a bigger space to read, study and connect.

Young readers, students and families in Lwandle are set to benefit from a library twice the size of the current facility. The R14,9 million expansion is on track for completion in November.

The upgrade, which began in March, will transform Lwandle Library into a larger, more modern and welcoming space. Here, residents can read, study and access the internet.

Main structural elements of the extension, roofing and alterations to the existing building are complete. Work has now shifted to internal finishes – ceilings, flooring, painting and joinery – along with a new entrance, signage and landscaping.

Francine Higham, Mayoral Committee member for Community Services and Health, recently visited the site to view progress. “It was encouraging to see the progress made,” she said.

“An investment in the expansion of the facility is an investment in a better community and will create more opportunities. The upgrade will create an accessible and user-focused environment that will continue to offer safe spaces where residents can read, study and access the internet.”

Although the library building remains closed during construction, the team has kept services alive in the community. Every Wednesday, library staff visit early childhood development centres. They bring storytelling, activities and block loans to keep young children connected to books and reading.

“Libraries are important community spaces that provide safe and accessible environments for residents of all ages, so I am also pleased that the team is continuing to take books and reading activities to young children while construction is underway,” added Higham.

Residents can continue using neighbouring libraries – Strand, Somerset West, Gordon’s Bay and Sir Lowry’s Pass – until Lwandle Library reopens its doors.
