Spur promises action as Gordon's Bay residents raise extraction noise concerns.
Spur promises action as Gordon’s Bay residents raise extraction noise concerns.

Letters to the Editor || Spur humming late at night

I am writing in the hope of bringing urgent attention to an ongoing issue that has severely disrupted the peace and well-being of residents living along Beach Road in Gordon’s Bay.

For the past couple of months, nearby residents have been subjected to persistent, intrusive noise originating from a chimney-type structure, presumably part of the extraction system, at the local Spur restaurant.

What began as a minor nuisance has escalated into a daily trial. The relentless mechanical humming, roaring and vibration continue unabated throughout operating hours and late into the night.

Living in Gordon’s Bay should offer a quality coastal lifestyle, not the constant drone of noisy mechanical equipment.

Despite this issue persisting for months, no effective steps seem to have been taken to dampen the sound, fit proper acoustic baffles, or address what is a clear noise nuisance under municipal health and environmental bylaws.

While we fully support local commercial enterprises and understand the operational needs of a busy restaurant, business success should not come at the direct expense of the health, sleep and peace of mind of surrounding residents.

I urge the management of Spur in Gordon’s Bay and the property owners to take immediate responsibility by inspecting, repairing or installing sound-attenuation measures on the structure. Should the problem persist, I hope City of Cape Town Law Enforcement will step in to enforce local compliance.

We simply want our peaceful environment restored.

Frustrated Gordon’s Bay resident.

Herman, manager at Sunset Bay Spur, responds: “Thank you for reaching out to us. We are mindful of our role in Gordon’s Bay and of the need to respect neighbouring residents. We work closely with local representatives and, until this concern was raised, had not received any direct complaints about noise from our operations. The restaurant’s extraction system is fitted with silencers and is subject to ongoing maintenance.

“Following the concern raised, our experts are evaluating the system, including its noise levels and will implement any necessary measures. We are committed to maintaining open engagement and managing our operations responsibly for both our guests and the community.”
