Dr GJ Joubert Primary in Strand is mourning the loss of a Grade 2 learner, who was declared dead on the school premises today (27 August).
Principal Tauhira Fanie announced the news on the school’s Facebook page. “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of one of our Grade 2 learners.”
The school said it had the unhappy duty of informing the learner’s family, but was unaware at the time of posting of the cause of death.
Fanie described this as a difficult time for those close to the learner and asked they all be kept in readers’ prayers. She added that psychological support would be provided to learners and staff.
“Our sincere condolences to the bereaved family. May you find strength and comfort during this difficult time.”

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) confirmed the passing of the learner.
Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson for the department, said the learner died in the afternoon.
“Attempts to revive the learner were made but he tragically passed away.”
The school leadership contacted emergency services who responded to the scene.
“The WCED sends its condolences to the family, friends and the whole school community for this tragic loss,” said Hammond.
