The Helderberg welcomed another sporting great home, when double Rugby World Cup winning Springbok Steven Kitshoff popped into the Old Bridge Tavern to sign his portrait, joining the legendary pack on display.
The venue was set for the signature moment last Wednesday (1 April), following the success of local artist Dennis Woest’s portrait signing with fellow Springbok golden boy Willie le Roux just last month (“The Helderberg’s Springbok star signs likeness at local tavern,” 11 March). The intimate gathering, arranged by the venue’s owner Danie van der Berg, saw the retired loosehead prop become the latest addition to Woest’s ambitious tribute to South Africa’s rugby heritage.
“It’s beautiful,” declared Kitshoff with genuine appreciation, taking in every brushstroke of his likeness immortalised in the portrait.
The Somerset West artist’s large-scale oil paintings celebrate rugby legends, including World Cup-winning captains Francois Pienaar, John Smit and Siya Kolisi, each portrait personally signed by its subject for authentication. Woest’s collection has already achieved commercial success, with pieces acquired by Rand Merchant Bank and Old Bridge Tavern. The artist aims to paint all players and coaches from South Africa’s four Rugby World Cup-winning teams before the 2027 tournament.
With the next on his easel, the local rugby hero’s signing will continue this celebration of the area’s connection to Springbok greatness at the traditional English-style pub on Main Road, Somerset West.
