The local rugby landscape shifted significantly this past weekend as high-scoring affairs and narrow escapes dominated Super League action in the Western Province.

Helderberg Rugby Club sent a clear message with a dominant 52-13 demolition of UWC at Charles Morkel Stadium in Strand on Saturday 2 May.

The victory was as clinical as it was necessary, propelling Berge to eighth place on the Super League A log with 11 points.

They sit mid-table in seventh, tied on points with False Bay, setting the stage for a mouth-watering fixture this coming Saturday (9 May). If Helderberg can maintain the offensive flair shown against UWC, a top-six finish is firmly in their sights.

The battle for supremacy between Macassar and All Saints rugby clubs continues unabated, with both sides maintaining their perfect starts to the season โ€“ four wins from four matches โ€“in Super League B.

The MC Boys showed Hamlets no mercy, cruising to a 38-10 victory. They currently occupy top spot on the log, backed by a commanding points difference of +58.

The Olla Boys had a far tougher day at the office, narrowly edging out Goodwood 39-36 in a high-octane thriller. Though level on 19 points with Macassar, they sit in second place on the log.

St George’s, currently in 11th place with seven points, will be looking to use their upcoming fixture against Young Peoples as a platform to climb out of the bottom half of the table.

Erhard Lambrecht hands off an opponent on his way to scoring a great try.

Sir Lowrians secured a hard-fought 14-8 win over Langa in Super League C, keeping them in eighth place with 11 points. They now turn their attention to a clash with Caledonian Roses, looking to solidify their mid-table standing.

It was a tougher weekend for the rest of the local contingent. Raithby Universals fell 26-18 to log-leaders Rangers, leaving them stranded in 13th place with three points.

Strand RFC remain in 14th place with two points after a 26-12 loss to Gardens, while Strand United suffered a narrow 20-24 defeat against Atlantis, remaining in 15th place with two points.

The fight for survival and mid-table dominance resumes this weekend. Sir Low will aim to capitalise on their momentum against 12th-placed Caledonian Roses.

United face a massive challenge against ninth-placed Eersteriver as they search for their first win of the season. Meanwhile, RU take on stragglers Langa in what promises to be a crucial battle.

Berge’s Luke Carew puts in a big hit.
