Helderberg Hospital shared the spirit of giving by donating essential items to residents at the Zandvliet Care Centre in Macassar.

The gesture brought smiles to residents and served as a reminder of the importance of compassion, kindness and community.

The donation was made possible through contributions from Helderberg Hospital management and staff, who came together to support the care centre and its residents.

Speaking at the event, Zandvliet Care Centre manager Lynn Nicholls reflected on the growth of the facility’s transitional care service.

“Our transitional care service started in 2018, offering only palliative care. Since then we have grown significantly and are proud of the rehabilitation work our team is doing. We look forward to receiving more patients from Helderberg Hospital and helping to reduce pressure on hospital services.”

She explained the facility had initially accommodated 60 older people, but had since expanded. The transitional care programme now provides patients with up to six weeks of care and rehabilitation before they return home or move to long-term care.

The facility currently cares for around 140 permanent residents and 25 patients in the transitional care ward. Helderberg Hospital and Zandvliet Care Centre continue to work closely together, with patients regularly referred between the two facilities to ensure the most appropriate care.

“We would like to thank Sharon Leo, the hospital CEO, and the staff of Helderberg Hospital for bringing smiles to our residents. Today has been a wonderful day, and we truly appreciate your kindness and generosity.”

Leo said the donation reflected the hospital’s commitment to caring for people beyond clinical treatment. “I am here today with Helderberg Hospital management and staff because this is our gift to you,” she said.

“This is about more than clinical care. It highlights the importance of building strong relationships within our community and reminds us that we are all human. Every member of staff played a part in making these donations possible, and I would like to thank them for their generosity and support.”

The event highlighted the strong partnership between Helderberg Hospital and Zandvliet Care Centre, demonstrating how working together can improve the lives of senior citizens and patients requiring transitional care.

As Mandela Month has come to an end, the donation serves as a reminder that even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference. Through their generosity, compassion and willingness to give, Helderberg Hospital staff honoured Nelson Mandela’s legacy of service and showed that caring extended far beyond the walls of a hospital.
