Feast of rugby sets up thrilling CommCup final


Blessed with ideal spring weather, Riverside Park in Macassar delivered a spectacular feast of running rugby as the 2026 CommCup kicked off with high-scoring thrillers, clinical performances and tightly contested battles on Sunday (4 October).

The opening round of action guaranteed that a brand-new CommCup champion will lift the trophy this year, setting up an eagerly anticipated finals following three compelling match-ups.

The tournament opened in spectacular fashion as Sir Lowrians and Faure treated fans to a breathless exhibition of attacking rugby.

Both sides showed intent from the opening whistle, but Sir Low eventually outpaced their opponents to secure an impressive 48-29 victory.

The dominant display put Sir Low firmly in contention for top honours, with David Erasmus earning the Score Energy Man of the Match award for his standout performance.

In the second match of the day, Eerste River produced a composed and clinical display to comfortably dispatch Strand United 32-8.

Controlling the tempo throughout and converting key opportunities into points, Eerste River proved too strong for their Strand rivals. Gershwin Koopman was named Score Energy Man of the Match after guiding his side into the main final.

Gritty performance

The final fixture of the day brought local rivalries to the fore as hosts Macassar squared off against Strand in a physical, hard-fought contest.

With little separating the two teams until the final whistle, the MC Boys held their nerve under pressure to claim a tight 21-15 victory. Though the host narrowly missed out on a bonus point, their gritty performance thrilled the home crowd. Cherwin Tandy received the Score Energy Man of the Match award for his influential role in the MC Boys’ hard-earned win.

With the opening round complete, organisers expressed gratitude to all participating teams, match officials, volunteers, sponsors and the vocal supporters who packed the stands at Riverside Park.
