Career expo in Strand broadens horizons for learners

The Strand Muslim Council Female Section hosted its annual career expo at Iqra Learning Centre in Strand on Saturday 19 September, drawing learners from schools across Helderberg basin.
Learners had the opportunity to engage directly with representatives from Stellenbosch University, the University of the Western Cape, Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Boland College, as well as the Metro Police, South African Police Service, Emergency Medical Services and local media houses.

Chairperson Zaida Crombie said the expo was aimed especially at Grade 9 and Grade 11 learners — the former needing to make subject choices for next year, and the latter preparing to apply to universities and colleges.
Crombie said the event gave learners the chance to see what careers are out there and to interact with people in different fields, helping them make informed decisions about their future paths.
All smiles at the career expo: Aqeel Bagus, Jahaan Kapdi, Mogamat Walied Isaacs, Shureez Stevens and Mikaeel Casner.The work of architectural technician Yaasir Baderoen drew the interest of Sufyaan Baderoen, a Grade 11 pupil at Madrasatur Rajaa High School.The career expo, aimed at offering young people insight and guidance on their future prospects, was organised by the Strand Moslem Council Female Section. Representatives on the day were Zaida Crombie (chairperson), Jasmina Samuels, Kamilah Karaan, Ferial Arnold, Fayrouz Green (assistant treasurer) and Shaheeda Khan.Manning an exhibition stall together were Lillian Albertyn (Strand Community Policing Forum chairperson) and Constable Abongile Kelembe (a Vispol member at Strand police).Metro police representatives Constable Likhona Moza, Superintendent Ruth Solomons and Inspector Daniel Leukes were armed with knowledge and ready to fire away at any learner’s questions.Rooted in the Strand community, Dr Nasreen Daniels is a specialist physician serving patients at Mediclinic Stellenbosch.Grade 9 Hottentots-Holland High School learner Zeanid Noor engaged with intermediate care practitioner Rephael Joseph.Student recruiters Joshua Davidson, representing Stellenbosch University, and Qaqamba Mhlauli of the University of the Western Cape were on hand to guide learners through their study options.Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s Grant Barends with Grade 11 Madrasatur Rajaa Strand Moslem Council High School learners Sumaya Mohamed, Khadijah Mohamud and Yasmin Ali.
