Well done to Super League B (SLB) clubs All Saints, St George’s and Helderberg who clinched bonus-point victories at the weekend and are firmly in the top five on the log.
With Strand and Macassar holding the top two positions in Super League C (SLC), Sir Lowrians almost qualifying for the top 9 Promotion League and Gordon’s Bay Pioneers in the semi-final of the Metro League, rugby fans can be proud of local clubs have persevered post Covid. This weekend’s fixtures are:
) Helderberg vs Franschhoek (Charles Morkel)
Berge are still unbeaten in SLB and fortress Charles Morkel is not where any club will want to go if they desperately need log points. Franschhoek’s travels to the Helderberg this season have been disastrous, and this week will not be different. Helderberg will want to be weary of peaking too soon.
) St George’s vs Busy Bees (Langa)
The Lulus have only dropped points against the league’s top three teams and have confidently swept everyone else in their path. Playing in Langa can be tricky, but Busy Bees are too inconsistent to rattle the visitors. The only question is: Will St Georges pick up four or five log points?
) Raithby Universals vs Blue Stars (Raithby)
RU are bottom of SLC and, with six matches left, will be getting a bit anxious about their results and the rest of the bottom six clubs. Blue Stars will know a win in this fixture will strengthen their battle for SLC survival, while the hosts will feel this is a non-negotiable must-win encounter.
) Strand United vs Albions (Paarl)
United come off an excellent win over Kraaifontein, but now need to get over the hoodoo of struggling on the road. Daljosafat is never an easy place to play and Albions are highly respected opponents. A win for United will give them that extra needed confidence before the derby versus Strand.
) Macassar vs Kraaifontein (Kraaifontein)
The MC Boys come off a bye and face a wounded Kraaifontein team that lost to the improving Strand United last week. Kraaie at home are a different proposition altogether. Both teams are competing for a realistic second position and an assured semi-final. This is a real test for the team from Macassar.
) Sir Lowrians vs Whistling Wheels (Eerste River)
The Navy Train are playing the bottom two teams in the Northern League in their last league fixtures before the Top 9 Promotion League. If they take maximum points, as expected, they’ll achieve their first half of the season goal. Wheels have been disappointing this season and their loss of form should continue this week.
) Gordon’s Bay Pioneers (Metro League semi-final)
GBP have done really well in their first full season under a new banner. A final and potential silverware will be the ultimate rewards for their efforts. Good luck, boys!
