Quality, truly impressive art by talented artists exhibited in a space, which is not focused on how many artworks can be featured to cater for every conceivable taste but rather establishing itself as a point of call for connoisseurs in search of “wow” masterpieces.
This according to art-gallery owner Jimmy Law is what local art lovers can expect from the new kid on the block, The Jimmy Law Contemporary Art Gallery.
The art lover’s delight opened its doors at 13 Drama Street, Somerset West for the first time on Monday 8 May, but will be officially launched on Thursday (25 May) at 18:00.
Law, in light of the milestone, shared finally realising his long-held dream despite the devastating Covid-19 pandemic that put a spanner in the works. “When I came across the premises in Drama Street about a month ago I grabbed the opportunity,” he related.
Law, who is a contemporary fine artist, sculptor and qualified graphic designer, channelled all his skills to create a one-of-a-kind space to showcase his own art as well as represent a handpicked selection of artworks by a few other impressive artists. “It is a beautiful contemporary space, 66 m² with some very interesting decor features such as the wallpaper based on some of my art and some very special and unique items like my chiffon silk scarfs, tote bags and cushions all with my art incorporated into the design,” said Law. “A charcoal ceiling with black rail lighting and crisp white walls make for an intimate and very impressive showcase space.”
He said he was grateful to everyone who contributed to this realisation of a dream.
Currently, the gallery represents Louis Chanu, Mervyn Dragsund, Janko de Beer, Vincent da Silva and Pieter van der Merwe.
“I know quite a few artists and the artists that I represent I do because I truly love their work,” reckoned Law. “I suggest that art lovers come and view the artworks on display as simply talking about it doesn’t do the artist or their work justice.”
Asked how many exhibitions the gallery plans on offering in a certain period, Law responded: “I think this is something that I will decide on as the gallery moves forward and I move forward with the artists represented.”
Law reckoned the Helderberg boasts many artists, both novice and professional, and Somerset West needs to be revived and revamped to uplift the town as a whole. So he calls on Helderbergers to support local business and artists.
“Somerset West has so much to offer,” he pointed out. “Invest in the renewal of your town and watch it grow.”
Law further thanked all the role players who have helped with the creation and establishment of the new art space. “More work has gone into creating this little space and what it represents than most people think and I am very grateful for all who has contributed, thank you.”
