Macassar Rugby Club once again showed their dominance in Super League C (SLC) with a resounding 56-6 victory Strand United in a Helderberg derby at Riverside Park in Macassar on Saturday (22 June).

Carlo le Roux’s men ran in nine tries against their neighbours as they looked to further cement their position at the top of the table. Winger Kyle Cookson opened the MC Boys’ account as early as the second minute of the encounter. Breyton Kleyn also walked away with a hat-trick of tries, further adding to his try-scoring tally for the season.

The first half was a tightly contested affair for long periods. United had the upper ascendency at times at scrum time, with Faizel Hercules and Usama Karan stepping up to the challenge. Two long range penalties from flyhalf Ameer Oliver were the only points the visitors could amass as the first half closed 20-6 in favour of the hosts.

The second half, though, was an opposite contest to what ensued in the first stanza. While United had strong periods of possession and territory, Macassar was just too strong and clinical for the visitors. The home side added six more tries in a one-sided second period, ending the match 56-6.

The gusting efforts of props Anwar Benjamin and Hewson Petersen, along with the attacking flair of Cookson and Lee-Mondre Benjamin deserve the utmost praise, underlining their individual tenacity and abilities in a team that currently cannot set a foot wrong.

The MC Boys are clearly the front runners in SLC.

United were a shadow of the side that won promotion to the league last year, and Macassar needed no second invitation to capitalise on their vulnerability.

Although the men from Strand had arguably their best spell of the game during the first quarter, it was day to forget for the visitors.

In Super League A (SLA), Helderberg Rugby Club suffered their second consecutive match defeat, losing 32-19 to Brackenfell on the road.

Berge took an early lead thanks to tries by Jady Labuschagne and Errol Jaggers. Despite a penalty kick and a converted try by Brackenfell, the visitors took the half-time lead (10-12).

In the second half Brackenfell added three more penalties and a drop goal, while Berge only notched up a brilliant try by captain Conway Pretorius, which was converted by Michael Visser.
