The Somerset West police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving after a multiple-vehicle collision on the N2 highway near the Victoria Street intersection on Thursday 28 May.

City of Cape Town Traffic Service spokesperson Kevin Jacobs confirmed that officers were dispatched at 08:07 and arrived to find four vehicles involved in the collision. One person sustained slight injuries.

Provincial Traffic documented the incident and arrested a driver on charges of reckless and negligent driving, as well as possession of an imitation firearm. The road was cleared by 09:25.

Warrant Officer Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for Somerset West police, confirmed the accident was reported just after 09:00.

“It is alleged that the driver of a vehicle drove recklessly. The driver was injured and taken to hospital for medical attention. The investigation continues,” she said.

When DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette arrived on the scene, emergency services personnel and traffic officials were already in attendance.

Tarren Olkers (31), one of the motorists whose vehicle was damaged, was still visibly shaken. He and his wife had just dropped someone at a nearby high school and turned onto the N2 from Lourens Street, heading toward Cape Town, when the collision occurred. “It happened so fast,” he recalled.

According to Olkers, the driver of a Lexus had turned onto the N2 from Victoria Street in the direction of Grabouw when the vehicle mounted and crossed the centre median, and collided with vehicles before crashing into his car.

“The first thing he said when he got out was, ‘I wasn’t speeding,’” Olkers said.
