Wet and muddy fields on Saturday (16 May) produced a thrilling round of Western Province club rugby action across the leagues.
From heavy forward battles in the Northern League to high-stakes running rugby in the super leagues, regional clubs experienced a weekend of contrasting fortunes.
On a waterlogged pitch at the Naval Sports Grounds in Gordon’s Bay, Faure Rugby Club put on a masterclass in forward dominance and clinical running rugby to dismantle Gordon’s Bay Pioneers 43-15 in a Northern League encounter.
The elements were not the only thing punishing the GB Pioneers, as their discipline let them down dismally under pressure.

The home team were crippled by six yellow cards, all stemming from repeated scrum infringements as their pack struggled to cope with Faure’s weight and technique.
Despite playing with a severely depleted defensive line for large portions of the match, Pioneers captain Germaine Simons led from the front and never stopped fighting, putting in a massive shift from the front to keep his team motivated.
Following the defeat, GB Pioneers sit eighth on the Northern League log with 10 points from seven games.
They now face a lengthy break to recalibrate before their next fixture against Whistling Wheels on Saturday 6 June.

Teams to beat
It is a dead heat at the summit of the Super League B standings, with Macassar and All Saints separating themselves as the teams to beat this season. Both powerhouses are unbeaten with perfect five-from-five records, sitting tied at 24 points each.
The Olla Boys kept up their blistering form by securing a hard-fought
34-22 victory against Collegians on Saturday, trailing top-ranked Macassar on points difference only.
St George’s suffered a heartbreaking defeat, falling 35-31 to Hamediehs in a high-scoring thriller. The narrow loss leaves the Lulu Boys in 14th position with nine points, desperately needing a win to climb out of the lower tiers of the table.

In Super League A, Helderberg travelled to take on Villager at Brookside, but found themselves on the wrong side of a 24-14 scoreline.
The loss keeps Berge in seventh position on the table with 16 points from six games, hovering just below the top tier of the tournament.
It was a mixed bag of results for the Helderberg’s representatives in Super League C.
Raithby Universals secured the standout result of the tier, executing a brilliant game plan to overcome Atlantis 26-17.
The vital second win of the season boosts RU to 11th on the table with 13 points.

Sir Lowrians did not feature over the weekend, but currently occupy sixth place with 16 points.
