Five suspected robbers remain at large after allegedly looting an undisclosed amount of money during a cash-in-transit heist at Somerset Crossing shopping centre outside Lwandle last Wednesday (5 November).

According to a preliminary police report, the incident occurred at a discount supermarket at 10:40, when the five unknown suspects posing as customers targeted two security personnel who were conducting a scheduled money delivery.

Two of the suspects were reportedly armed with firearms and held the security officers at gunpoint, instructing them to lay on the ground while they removed service weapons and cash bags from the delivery trolley.

The suspects initially attempted to flee through the back of the store but found the back gate locked, forcing them to return through the store and exit via the front entrance.

The driver of the armoured vehicle, who was waiting at the rear of the premises, only became aware of the incident after it occurred and did not witness the robbery.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows the suspects fleeing to waiting getaway vehicles – a white bakkie and white car – positioned at the back of the shopping centre.

Police confirmed that an undisclosed amount of cash and two service pistols – a 9 mm Norinco and 9 mm Vector CP1, each with live rounds of ammunition – were stolen during the incident.

No injuries were reported during the robbery. Lwandle police have opened a case of cash-in-transit robbery and are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
