The Helderberg Chess Club solidified its reputation as a leading force in junior chess development by delivering a commanding performance in the 2025 Cape Town Junior League Finals held at Meridian Pinehurst in Durbanville on Saturday 31 May.
Competing against more than 300 talented young players from across the region, Helderberg emerged as one of the top clubs, securing an impressive nine podium finishes, the highest tally of any of the participating clubs.
The prestigious finals marked the culmination of the junior chess season, with players battling it out in two distinct divisions: the highly competitive A-Section and the supportive Development Section.
Helderberg showcased remarkable depth, excelling in both categories and demonstrating its commitment to nurturing talent.
In the under-14 A-Section, Helderberg’s girls’ team delivered an outstanding performance, securing second place while the boys’ team took third.
This result highlights the club’s significant success in developing strong female competitors within the sport.
Beyond the sheer number of medals, several performances particularly shone.
Adding to the excitement, the club’s youngest competitors in the under-8 Development Section delivered a delightful upset, soaring to first place against players in the under-10 division.

– A Section: under-18 A – third; under-16A – second; under-14A (girls) – second; and under-14 A (open) – third.
– Development Section: under-8 development – first; under-10 development – second; under-10 development (girls) – third; under-12 development – third; and under-16 development – second.
