EASTERN CAPE – The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has been authorised to investigate allegations of serious maladministration and corruption in six contracts awarded by the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, including two swimming pool projects and the Water World development.
President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a proclamation this week directing the unit to probe the procurement of goods, works and services related to the Mdantsane NU2 Swimming Pool Project, consulting engineer services for the Water World Project, and the appointment of the main contractor for Water World.
The investigation will also examine contracts awarded to First New Generation Trading for the demolition of existing walls, and to Lefito Trading, trading as Kuyasa Electrical Contractors, for the removal of the Donkin wall and palisade installation.
Scope of investigation
The SIU will investigate allegations of serious maladministration, improper or unlawful conduct by employees of the municipality and the Buffalo City Metropolitan Development Agency, and the unlawful appropriation or expenditure of public money or property.
The unit will examine whether payments made in connection with these contracts were fair, competitive, transparent, equitable or cost-effective, or whether they were contrary to applicable legislation.
