Community fears retaliation attacks after alleged gang leader is killed


The community of the broader Bonteheuwel is fearing a flare up in gang violence after an alleged gang leader was shot and killed yesterday on the bridge close to the corner of Jakkalsvlei Avenue and Valhalla Drive.

One dead, one injured

According to Captain FC van Wyk, police spokesperson, the shooting took place around 14:25. “A 36-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded and a 30-year-old man injured. The deceased sustain multiple shots to the body, and the injured victim sustain gunshot wounds to the face, arm and hand. According to reports, the two were driving from Bonteheuwel towards Kalksteenfontein and as they were driving a blue coloured Audi vehicle passed and the occupants randomly started shooting at them. The registration number of the Audi vehicle is unknown,” says van Wyk.

Van Wyk says the injured victim was privately transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. “The motive for this shooting incident forms part of the police investigation. A case of murder and attempted murder was opened for further investigation. Anyone with information about this shooting incident is requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” he says.

Agencies briefed

Angus McKenzie, sub-council chair, says the development raises serious concerns about the potential for retaliatory violence. “In response, we have already engaged and briefed the relevant safety and security agencies operating in the area, including the army, to ensure heightened vigilance and visible presence where necessary. We will be monitoring the situation closely and remain in constant communication with law enforcement and security partners to ensure swift and coordinated action. We urge anyone with information that may assist investigations to come forward immediately,” says McKenzie.
