Cheetah players renew contracts; young players join the ranks


BLOEMFONTEIN – The Currie Cup season kicks off on 19 July with the Cheetahs playing against the Lions in the Toyota Stadium.

Ahead of the season, the Cheetahs announced important contract renewals that will help with continuity and stability.

A number of players have extended their contracts. They include:

  • Sisonke Vumazonke (loose forward) who has committed until 2029. Vumazonke is a powerful and dynamic member of the pack who has become an important contributor through his physicality, work rate and consistency.
  • Matome “Dux” Manyama (loosehead prop) has extended his stay until 2028. The strong scrummager continues to establish himself as a key member of the front row.
  • Marko Janse van Rensburg (hooker) remains part of the Cheetahs’ setup after extending his contract. His experience and reliability at set-piece time make him a valuable member of the squad.
  • Shaun Ray (fullback) has also recommitted. A skilful and exciting attacking player, Ray continues to offer creativity and versatility from the backfield.
  • Mihlali Mosi (loose forward) has earned a contract extension following his continued development and contribution to the team environment.
  • Aranos Coetzee (prop)remains with the Cheetahs, adding important depth and experience to the front row.
  • Munier Hartzenberg (outside back) has signed on until 2028. His pace, finishing ability and versatility make him an important asset in the backline.
  • Marco Jansen van Vuren (scrumhalf) continues his journey with the Cheetahs after extending his contract through to 2028. He remains an influential figure in directing play and maintaining tempo.
  • John Kelly Okonkwo (prop) has also renewed his contract, continuing his development within the Cheetahs system.
  • Gideon van der Merwe (loose forward) remains part of the squad, bringing energy and commitment to the forward pack.
  • Prince Nkabinde (wing) has extended his stay, ensuring further continuity among the outside backs.
  • Cohen Jasper (back) continues with the Cheetahs after signing a new contract. His ability to cover multiple positions provides valuable flexibility to the coaching staff.
  • Pierre Raymond Uys (forward) has also recommitted to the union. Equally comfortable at lock and loose forward, Uys adds versatility and physical presence to the pack.

Players that will be moving on from the Cheetahs are Pieter Janse van Vuuren, George Lourens, Banie Brits, James Verity-Amm, Franco Smith and Thabang Mhalasi.

Investing in the future

The Cheetahs is also committed to strengthen its development pathway through a group of talented young players who have committed their futures to Cheetahs Rugby.

These players include:

  • Myburg Jacobs (hooker) joints from Trio High School in Kroonstad.
  • Jade Muller (wing) and Winton Abrahams (centre) graduate from the Central University of Technology (CUT after impressing in the university ranks.
  • Eddie Mabena, O’Ryan Kleyn, Christoff Crous and Chris Nieuwoudt from Grey College have all signed sunior contracts, continuing the strong relationship between Free State Rugby and one of South Africa’s premier rugby schools.
  • Mahlatze Memeza (hooker) from Jeppe High School brings promise to the union’s junior structure.

These signings reflect the commitment of the Cheetahs to the development of young players.
