A 56-year-old man, Cameron Baya, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court yesterday on charges relating to inciting racial violence on social media.

He was arrested by the Hawks’ Bellville-based CATS (Crimes Against the State) Unit on Tuesday for contraventions of the Riotous Assemblies Act as well as the Cybercrimes Act, after allegedly making threats inciting violence against black individuals and expressing his intent to provoke a race war.

The investigation that led to Baya’s arrest began on 28 March, when the Hawks received intelligence from a foreign agency regarding an individual posting violent statements on a social-media platform, according to Hawks spokesperson Col Siyabulela Vukubi.

Baya was released on R1 000 bail. The matter was postponed to 16 September for further investigation.
