Bulls land World Cup winner Smith in major three year coup

The Vodacom Bulls have pulled off a masterstroke, securing the signature of two-time Rugby World Cup winner Kwagga Smith on a three-year deal after the Springbok loose forward parted ways with Japanese outfit Shizuoka Blue Revs last week. The signing represents a significant statement of intent from the Pretoria-based franchise as they look to bolster their backrow arsenal with one of world rugby’s most dynamic operators.

Smith, who reached a mutual agreement with the League One club to end his contract, brings a wealth of silverware and experience to Loftus Versfeld. The pocket rocket’s arrival reunites him with Bulls coach Johan Ackermann, who previously guided him during his breakthrough years at the Lions.

“As a youngster, he showed character and fight and integrity. He’s a team man who has grown into a stalwart, and it’s been a privilege to watch his career unfold and establish himself as one of the best backrows in world rugby,” Ackermann said. “Wherever he goes he makes a difference, and I look forward to him contributing both on and off the field.”

The signing comes as Smith continues his recovery from a devastating knee injury suffered in May 2026, when he tore his ACL and meniscus whilst playing for the Blue Revs. The setback ruled him out for the remainder of last season, but medical experts have since cleared the 31-year-old to return to action at the end of December.

“I’m very excited to be joining,” Smith said. “I’m already jogging. I miss the rugby but I’m feeling good. My wife is pregnant, due in January, so the timing of joining the Bulls is perfect. Playing under Johan Ackermann was one of my best experiences. I’m looking forward to getting back by early next year.”

Bulls CEO Edgar Rathbone was effusive in his praise for the new recruit, highlighting the intangibles that make Smith such a prized asset.

“Kwagga is a proven winner who has achieved just about everything the game has to offer, and he has never lost his hunger,” Rathbone said. “His work rate, physicality and fearlessness are exactly what we want in Bulls colours. He will drive standards inside our group, and our supporters will love the way he plays.”

With Smith’s combative style and championship pedigree set to inject fresh energy into the Bulls’ pack, Loftus faithful have every reason to be excited about what lies ahead.
