The Vodacom Bulls have thrown down the gauntlet to their United Rugby Championship rivals, unveiling a statement recruitment drive that signals serious title intent for the next three seasons.
In a consolidated announcement, the Pretoria-based franchise confirmed the acquisition of seven high-calibre players following what officials described as a rigorous scouting and assessment process designed to address key positional needs.
Bosch returns to lead backline revolution
The headline grabber is undoubtedly the homecoming of former Springbok flyhalf Curwin Bosch, who will swap French rugby for Loftus Versfeld on a three-year deal commencing in July. Bosch brings elite tactical kicking, razor-sharp game management, and proven goal-kicking pedigree, precisely the sort of artillery the Bulls need to unlock stubborn defences in the knockout stages.
His arrival represents a calculated gamble that experience trumps potential at the pivot, particularly with the URC’s intensity showing no signs of abating.
Abrahams’ lethal finishing back in Mzansi
Joining Bosch in the exodus from Europe is the electric Thaakir Abrahams, who returns to South African shores from Munster on a two-year deal. The speedster offers devastating finishing options across wing and fullback, with the ability to turn half-chances into seven-pointers.
Abrahams’ versatility will prove invaluable as the Bulls navigate the gruelling URC and Champions Cup schedules, providing Johan Ackermann with tactical flexibility in selection.
Youth investment signals long-term vision
Perhaps the most intriguing acquisition is 19-year-old Luan Giliomee, who has inked a three-year deal despite his tender years. The specialist flyhalf enjoyed a standout URC debut at fullback for the Sharks earlier this year, showcasing composure beyond his age.
Giliomee’s versatility and rugby intellect make him the perfect understudy to Bosch, whilst his ability to deputise at fullback adds another string to the Bulls’ bow.
Back three depth reaches new heights
The Bulls have also fortified their back three stocks with surgical precision. Former Junior Bok and Paarl Boys’ High fullback sensation Hakeem Kunene arrives on a three-year deal, bringing blistering pace and aerial prowess to Loftus.
He’s joined by wing Dylan Maart (via Griquas) and Pumas outside centre Sango Xamlashe, both on two-year deals. The duo will link up with the squad following the conclusion of the Currie Cup, adding crucial depth and competition for places.
This recruitment blitz sends an unmistakable message: the Bulls are building for sustained dominance, not just a flash-in-the-pan season. By securing players across multiple age profiles, Ackers has crafted a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts whilst testing future stars.
