The Bulls kept their United Rugby Championship play-off hopes alive with a nail-biting 34-31 victory over Munster at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, in a match where individual brilliance compensated for numerous handling errors.

Despite the victory not always being convincing, Johan Ackermann’s side secured a crucial win that maintains their chances of reaching the play-offs. Munster, whilst losing, claimed two valuable bonus points that could prove vital in the race for play-off positions.

First half sees momentum swing

Both teams started cautiously, with the Bulls immediately asserting dominance at scrum time to put pressure on the Munster pack. However, early attacking opportunities were squandered through basic errors, with misplaced passes and knock-ons preventing the home side from capitalising on their territorial advantage.

Munster struck first in the 20th minute when winger Seán O’Brien crossed in the left corner following their first meaningful attack into Bulls territory. Jack Crowley’s difficult touchline conversion gave the visitors a 7-0 lead.

The Bulls’ response came through a moment of individual brilliance from scrumhalf Embrose Papier, who broke on the blindside before cutting back inside to score under the posts after a 45-metre run. Handré Pollard’s conversion levelled the scores at 7-7.

Despite losing Ruan Nortjé to a yellow card for head-on-head contact, the Bulls took the lead when a swift transitional attack saw Stedman Gans create space for Canan Moodie to cross on the right. Pollard’s conversion made it 14-7 at half-time.

Second half thriller

Munster made the perfect start to the second half when flanker Tom Ahern rounded off an attack from the halfway line, though Crowley missed the conversion to leave the Bulls ahead 14-12.

The Bulls extended their lead when Papier showcased his pace again, chasing down and collecting a Ruan Vermaak hack ahead for his second try. Pollard’s conversion made it 21-12.

Ahern struck again for Munster, barging over for his second try after an extended period of pressure on the Bulls line. Crowley’s successful conversion cut the deficit to 21-19 with 28 minutes remaining.

Late drama decides outcome

Replacement winger Cheswill Jooste produced another moment of magic for the Bulls, cutting inside the Munster defence before using his pace to leave covering tacklers behind for the bonus-point try. Pollard’s conversion and subsequent penalty extended the lead to 31-19.

Munster secured their four-try bonus point when Crowley put fullback Ben O’Connor into space for a converted try, reducing the deficit to 31-26 with 14 minutes left.

After some excellent defensive work from captain Marcell Coetzee earned the Bulls crucial penalties, Pollard extended their lead to 34-26 in the 73rd minute.

However, handling errors continued to plague the Bulls, and Munster capitalised when Edwin Edogbo forced his way over. Crowley missed the conversion, leaving the final score at 34-31.

Looking ahead

The victory keeps the Bulls in contention for the play-offs, though Ackermann will know significant improvement is needed. The performances of Papier and Jooste, combined with Pollard’s reliable kicking, ultimately proved decisive in securing a vital win.
