WELKOM – Police have uncovered an alleged kidnapping syndicate operating from a house in Karee Crescent, Welkom, leading to the arrest of five suspects.
According to information available at the scene, police discovered one kidnapping victim inside the property. The victim is alleged to have been severely assaulted and tortured. The authorities have not yet released details regarding the individual’s condition.
Police also allegedly found the body of a man in the property’s garage. His identity and the circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been confirmed.
Residents gathered at the scene alleged that the property had been occupied by the suspects for some time and it is assumed that criminal activities had been taking place there. These claims have not been independently verified. Neighbours were alerted to the goings one when they heard shots being fired outside.

Sources further allege that the breakthrough came after a young woman who had reportedly been kidnapped in Virginia managed to escape and alerted police to the address in Welkom. Investigators are now probing whether the group may be linked to a wider kidnapping network operating across the Matjhabeng area.
Unconfirmed information also suggests that the owner of the Karee Crescent property has business interests and owns multi-million-rand property in Sandton. Police have not confirmed any connection between the property owner and the alleged criminal activities.
The South African Police Service is expected to provide an official statement as investigations continue. More information will be published as it becomes available.
