BLOEMFONTEIN – Mangaung residents are urgently warned of dangerous conditions along the Modder River due to rising water levels caused by severe weather conditions.

The affected area encompasses the Modder River basin, particularly downstream from Mockes Dam towards Maselspoort Resort, according to a statement issued by Mangaung Metro Municipality on 1 May.

Residents are strongly advised to:

  • Stay away from the Modder River and all riverbanks until declared safe.
  • Avoid all river crossings until further notice.
  • Immediately remove belongings, livestock, or structures located within or along riverbanks.
  • Exercise extreme caution, as water levels may rise rapidly without warning.

Critical dangers include:

  • Sudden flooding and strong currents
  • Risk of drowning when attempting to cross
  • Loss of property, livestock, and infrastructure

These precautionary measures are essential to protect lives and prevent property damage. Emergency teams are actively monitoring the situation, with further updates to be communicated as conditions develop.

The public is urged to cooperate fully and prioritise safety at all times.
